유럽의 허브도시 룩셈부르크

Luxembourg, Hub City for Europe

Luxembourg, Hub City for EuropeYong-Jae Lee*16)Nestled between France, Belgium and Germany in the heart of Europe, the GrandDuchy of Luxembourg has been involved in the great European developments. At thecrossroads of European peoples, Luxembourg City displays a set of multiculturalidentities in European colors. Despite its small size, Luxembourg has played a greatrole in making a prosperous and integrated Europe. The decisive opening up of the country and the city took place within theframework of European unification. It was possibly no coincidence that the historicinitiative of uniting Europeans came from Robert Schuman, a French minister forForeign Affairs, born in Luxembourg of a French father and a Luxembourgishmother, and grown up in Germany. The education he has received in varioustransnational cultures provided him with the groundwork for the task of EuropeanIntegration. Luxembourg City has been regarded, in the minds of the Europeans, as one of thethree capitals of Europe, alongside Brussels and Strasbourg. The capital of GrandDuchy became home to important Community institutions; the Secretariat of theEuropean parliament, the Court of Justice, the European Investment bank, etc. Toaccommodate these institutions, the Luxembourg City established a European districton the Kirchberg plateau. Nowadays the Luxembourg City is seen as a microcosm ofEurope.
