Beginning of Division of Europe; treaties of Verdun and Mersen

843년 베르？？ 조약과 870년 메르센 조약으로 프랑크 왕국은 오늘날 프랑스·독일·이탈리아의 기본틀을 제공하였다. 프랑크는 관습적으로 분할 상속과 왕위 공동 세습을 유지하였고 이는 메로빙 왕조의 끊이지 않는 왕국의 분열과 쇠퇴의 원인이 되기도 하였다. 7세기 초 부르군드, 아우스트라시아, 네우스트리아로 크게 3등분된 프랑크 왕국을 통합해 낸 카롤루스 마그누스의 죽음 후 프랑크 왕국은 그의 손자들에 의해서 분할되기 시작했다. 843년 베르？？ 조약과 870년 메르센 조약은 카롤루스 마그누스의 통합된 제국의 새로운 단계로 진입하는 과정이며 동시에 유렵의 분할과 근대 국가의 틀을 제공하는 출발점이라는 역사적 의미를 지닌다. 그러나 이 조약들로 분할된 프랑크 왕국을 근대국가의 개념과 성격으로 접근하는 것은 신중할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 ‘유럽 분할의 시작’을 알리는 베르？？-메르센 조약을 재조명함으로써 오늘날 유럽의 모습이 만들어지는 과정과 유럽의 성격을 이해하는 새로운 기회를 제공하고자 한다.

After the death of Carolus Magnus, for resolving the disputes of successions, his empire is divided to the treaty of Verdun in 843 and that of Mersen in 870 by his successors who were sons of Louis le Pieux. It can be said that Francia enters into a new phase and concurrently, becomes two modern nations, what we called, one is France and the other is Germany. Certainly, it is necessary for us to examine the treaty of Verdun as well as that of Mersen because of their importance for the history of Europe. Unfortunately, we have no original documents concerning the treaty of Verdun in 843 and that of Mersen in 870. Besides, the copy of the treaty of Verdun that was sent to the Pope disappeared. So, we don t only know the exact place of making this treaty but also catch the concrete context of this situation. Today, to tell the truth, we have limits for examining the treaty of Verdun and that of Mersen. In spite of limits and problems of the sources concerning these treaties, this article aims to consider carefully the historical and political situation of making these treaties based on the witness and the narratives of contemporary authors. It gives us the opportunity to understand the historical meaning and role of these treaties in the history of Europe from 9th century up to now. In a word, the treaty of Verdun and that of Mersen take the historical place of process of performance in keeping the tradition of confraternité suggested by Carolus Magnus and simultaneously in preparing the advent of modern nations of Europe.
