(Purpose) As the scope and importance of Korean Police duties increase further due to the government s pursuit of reform of power institutions, the motivation for police officers public service will inevitably become more and more critical. This study complements the existing literature on police officers job motivation and conducts an empirical study on socialization factors specifically influencing police officers public service motivation(PSM). (Design/methodology/approach) Two categories of socialization, general and organizational socialization, were examined as the antecedents of PSM. This study used OLS regression for examining the relationship between the four dimensions of PSM and the antecedents. (Findings) This study provides some statistical survey evidence that the PSM of Korean police officers depends on the early socialization process before entering the police job career. Parental modeling and organizational culture are mainly two dominant predictors of all dimensions of their PSM. Also, the level of self-sacrifice decreases significantly as the rank increases, while the workplace experience of reorganization harms their compassion toward others. (Research implications or Originality) The findings of this study suggest that Korean police HR management needs to create a friendly environment at the workplace and choose applicants whose parents have worked in the public sector before. This paper also contributes to the current research on PSM by examining the relationship between the socialization processes and four sub-dimensions of Korean police officers’ PSM.
