Augustine on Spirituality: Re-reading for Ages of Avarice as a Virtue

영성적 전환의 시대에 기독교는 영성에 관하여 무엇을 말할 수 있을까? 이 논문은 탐욕이 미덕으로 추앙되는 현대 사회와 현대인이 바람직한 영성을 회복할 수 있는 통찰을 아우구스티누스의 유산에서 찾는다. 아우구스티누스에 따르면, 그리스도인은 개인으로서 내면적 영성을 통하여 탐욕과 죄를 참회하며 도덕성을 추구해야 한다. 교인으로서, 그리스도인은 교회적 영성을 통하여 복음의 공동체를 구현해야 한다. 그리고 시민으로서, 그리스도인은 공감과 환대의 사회적 영성을 구현해야 한다. 이 논문은 특히 탐욕을 미덕으로 간주하는 현대인으로 하여금 아우구스티누스가 제시한 통전적 영성의 회복을 통하여 탐욕을 넘어서 사회적 영성으로 나아가야 한다는 사실을 강조한다.

What can Christianity tell for our times, which regard spirituality as a substitute for religion? This paper tries to answer this question by re-examining Augustine’s legacy of spirituality. According to Augustine, as an individual, a Christian has to restore the spirituality of repentance and morality through the inner horizon of spirituality. As a believer also, a Christian has to fulfill the ecclesial spirituality. And as a citizen, Christian must embody the social spirituality of empathy and hospitality. In particular, this article emphasizes the realization of social spirituality as an ethical task for Christians. Based on the restoration of integral or holistic view of spirituality including inner, ecclesial, and social spirituality, Christians have to overcome the prosperity gospel and to realize the publicness of Christian faith. This is the way to restore Augustine’s legacy of spirituality.
