웨슬리의 영적 감각 사상과 칸트 이후 신(神)-인식론

John Wesley’s Notion of the Spiritual Senses and its Implication for Contemporary Theological Epistemology

이 논문은 칸트 이후 인식론이 신(神) 인식에서 나타내는 난점들을 적시하고, 이들을 극복하는 데 웨슬리의 영적 감각 사상이 도움이 된다는 점을 보이고자 하는 하나의 시도이다. 웨슬리는 이성이 권위를 가지기 시작한 시기, 합리적 실증적 접근이 지식의 습득에 중요한 방법으로 등장한 시기였던 초기 근대에 살았다(1703~1791). 이러한 시대적 경향 속에서 그는 당시의 새로운 접근법들을 진리 탐구의 수단으로 인정하면서도 그것들이 가지는 초월적 종교적 경험과 인식 상의 어려움을 지적하고 이에 대한 극복 방안을 논하였다. 다시 말해, 웨슬리의 영적 감각 사상은 당시 점증하던 현상의 세계, 자연의 세계에만 시선을 고정하려는 태도에 대한 반발이었으며, 사람들 사이에 존재하는 영적 인식의 차이를 결정론적으로 이해하려는 태도를 넘어서려는 노력이었다. 극복을 위한 노력의 과정에서 웨슬리는 초기 기독교 전통에 있던 감각의 정화와 발달에 관한 가르침들을 참조였다. 이러한 웨슬리의 사상은 자연 세계만을 삶과 인식의 무대로 전제하려는 우리들의 태도를 재고하게 한다. 또한 인식 능력을 고정불변한 것으로 전제하는 경향이 우리에게 있음을 보게한다. 즉 우리들의 감각과 인식 능력에 변형과 발전의 가능성 있음을 깨닫게 한다. 그 발전은 신적 리얼리티를 감지하는 데로 나아가며, 신적인 것을 경험, 인식, 분별함을 통하여 신적인 것과의 연합의 완성까지 나아간다. 그뿐만 아니라, 웨슬리는 이러한 감각과 인식의 변형과 점진적인 발달과 성숙을 위해서는 신적인 것에 대한 사랑과 헌신, 성령과 협력하는 정화의 노력, 규칙에 따라 훈련하는 삶이 중요하다는 사실을 강조하였다. 이와 같은 웨슬리의 영적 감각 사상은 신적 실재와의 소통과 대면과 연합의 경험을 이해하는 약점을 보이는 현대 인식론의 한계를 넘어서는 데 도움을 제공한다.

In this article, I have attempted to prove the feasibility of Wesley’s teachings on the spiritual senses as an alternative to modern epistemology in two ways. First, I tried to show that Wesley’s notion of the spiritual senses is a result of his effort to overcome the early modern deterministic understanding of the differences among people’s spiritual perception ability. Second, in comparing the features of Wesley’s notion of the spiritual senses to Coakley’s three suggestions, I determined that these three points are significant ingredients of Wesley’s notion. This exploration confirms that Wesley’s notion of the spiritual senses—which emphasizes regeneration, transformation, progress, purification of the heart and the senses, and practices in one’s spiritual journey—is able to serve as an alternative to modern epistemology because of the latter’s weakness in perceiving spiritual experiences. In other words, Wesley tried to overcome the limits of Lockean epistemology in relation to sensing spiritual reality and Calvin’s sensus divinitatis. In doing so, referring to teachings on the spiritual senses in the early Christian tradition, he synthesized his own empiricism. With his new notion, Wesley criticized the tendency to simply focus on the natural realm and to reject the possibility of transformation of the perception, and he emphasized the transformation and gradual development of the perception as well as the significance of the purification of the affections and a disciplined life. As such, Wesley’s notion of the spiritual senses is helpful in overcoming the weakness of modern epistemology by accounting for and articulating the content of spiritual experiences.
