Empathy Factor Analysis of Classic Humanities Texts Centered on Camus’ The Plague

이 글에서는 인문 고전이 시간과 공간을 초월하여 의미를 발할 수 있는 힘은 어디에 있는지 탐구했다.코로나 19시대 세계적으로 각광받는 카뮈의 『페스트』를 통해 인문 고전 텍스트가 공감을 활성화하는 요인을 분석했다.카뮈의 『페스트』는 세계2차대전 종식직후 1947년 출간된 이래,2020년 전 세계적으로 많이 읽혔다. 카뮈의 『페스트』에 내재해 있는 공감의 기제를 분석하기 앞서,카뮈의 작품이 한국에서 수용되는 과정에 주목해 보았다.카뮈와 그의 문학은 1950년부터 소개되었으며1950년대 중반부터 작품이 본격적으로 번역되어 1970년대 전집이 발간되었다.불문학 전공자에 의해 번역되었으며 한국전란으로 말미암아 척박해진 현실과 더 왜소해진 인간을 이해하고,삶을 견지해 나갈 수 있는 인식의 지평을 제공했다. 카뮈의 『페스트』는 인문 고전으로서 세 가지 공감요인을 갖추고 있음을 알 수 있다.첫째,재현과 반복의 속성을 보여주고 있으며,둘째 인간의 길,셋째 진리의 길을제시하고 있다.카뮈는 인간과 삶에 편재해 있는 보편적인 재현의 장치를 통해 시간과 공간을 달리하여 환유적으로 읽을 수 있도록 만들었다.시간과 공간을 초월하여인문 고전이 유의미한 가치를 발휘한다고 할 때,그 가치를 재현과 반복,인간의 길, 진리의 길을 보여주기 때문이라고 설명할 수 있다. 카뮈의 『페스트』가 모든 인문 고전 텍스트를 포괄할 수는 없지만,적어도 그 안에고전으로서 가치가 내재해 있다고 할 때 『페스트』에서 분석한 세 가지 공감 요인은인문 고전에 내재해 있는 보편적 가치로 이해할 수 있다.요컨대 우리는 인문 고전에서 텍스트에 재현된 인물과 사건을 통해 인간과 삶에 편재한 보편성에 눈을 뜨고,시간과 공간을 초월하여 보편타당한 인간의 길,진리의 길을 발견할 수 있다.

This article explored the power of humanities classics to express meaning across time and space. It analyzed the factors of humanities and classical texts that activate empathy through Camus’ La Peste, which has been in the spotlight across the world during the COVID-19 era. Camus’ La Peste has been widely read worldwide since its publication in 1947, shortly after the end of World War II. Before analyzing the mechanism of empathy inherent in Camus’ La Peste, we focused on the process of Camus’s work being accepted in Korea. Camus’ literature was introduced in Korea in 1950 and his works have been translated in earnest since the mid-1950s. They were translated by a French literature major and provided a level of awareness to understand the reality of being barren due to the Korean War and to maintain life. Camus’ La Peste is a humanistic classic with three elements of empathy. First, it shows the properties of representative and repetition; second, it reveals the human path; and third, the path of truth. Camus’s text made it possible to read across time and space through a universal representative’s rhetoric that is ubiquitous in humans and life. Humanistic classics are considered to exhibit meaningful values that transcend time and space, which can be explained through their focus on representative and repetition, human path, and the path of truth. Although Camus’ La Peste is one among many classic humanities texts, its intrinsic value as a classic—the three empathy factors—can be understood as universal values inherent in humanities classics. Thus, through characters and events reproduced in classic humanities texts, we can open our eyes to the universality of humans and life, and discover universal human paths and paths of truth that transcend time and space.
