The Impact of Components of Biocluster on Cluster’s Performance, as a Mediating Variable of Firm’s Performance: Focusing on Bio-Companies in Korea and China

Purpose This study aims to identify the current status of bio-clusters for the development of the bio-industry in Korea and China, derive major influencing components, and conduct empirical analyses on the effects of bio-companies and bio-clusters. Design/Methodology/Approach In this study, the concept and components of bio-clusters were first obtained through literature research. Firm’s performance and cluster’s performance, empirical analyses of representative bio-clusters in Korea and China were carried out. Findings First, among the various variables, the degree of cooperation had the greatest impact on the firm’s performance. Second, there was a difference in the components of the bio-clusters of Korea and China in ‘Government Support’ and ‘Competition’, In addition, inward foreign direct investment (FDI) showed different results in both Korea’s and China’s bio-clusters. The main reasons for these result are due to the different culture and institution of the two countries. Research Implications First, rather than self-technology development, companies within the bio-cluster can achieve better performance by creating synergy effects through “cooperation” with innovative entities such as other institutions, domestic and foreign companies. Second, the physical conditons of bio-clusters are important not only for industrial infrastructure, but also for residential infrastructure (or living conditions). Third, the issue of inward FDI is a necessary condition for Korea and China, where the bio-industry is somewhat weak, and more active policy efforts are needed.
