경계의 존재들이 제기하는 의문들

Questions raised by beings on the border: Korean-Japanese and ‘Nation’, ‘Language’, ‘Literature’

자신의 뜻과는 무관하게 한국도 북한도 일본도 아닌 경계를 사는 재일조선인들은 당연하다고 생각하거나 자명하다고 믿어 의심하지 않는 관념들에 균열을 내거나 의문을 제기하는 하는 방식으로 그 존재를 드러내는 경우가 흔하다. 그들은 보이지 않는 곳에서 보이지 않는 존재로 살아가지만, 어디에나 있을 수 있고 그들의 목소리는 어느 곳에서도 들려올 수 있다. 그들은 의도하든 의도하지 않든 당연하다거나 자명하다고 믿고 있는 여러 가지 관념들을 불편하게 만들거나 흔들어 버린다. 그들은 밖으로 내몰린 경계의 존재들이기 때문에 국가, 언어, 문학 등 근대를 구성하는 핵심적인 관념들에 곧잘 문제를 제기한다. 그러므로 그들이 제기하는 의문은 그만큼 본질적이고 근본적이다. 국가는 과연 동일한 역사와 언어로 구성되어 있는 견고한 체제인가? 그리고 그 체제는 과연 아무도 벗어날 수 없는가? 그들이 쓰는 언어는 과연 모두 같은 속성을 지니고 있는가? 그 언어는 과연 의사소통을 원활하게 하는 것에만 기여하는가? 오히려 차별과 배제의 수단으로 작용하지는 않는가? 그 언어로 이루어진 문학은 과연 사람들의 보편적 감정에 충실한가? 그래서 문학은 의심할 수 없는 제도인가? 그들이 제기하는 의문들은 때로는 불편하고 당혹스럽지만 그들을 똑바로 바라보고 그들이 건네는 말에 귀를 기울여야 할 것이다.

It is common that Korean-Japanese living on the border who are neither South Korean nor North Korean nor Japanese often reveal their existence, regardless of their will, by cracking notions or questioning ideas that people do not doubt because they think they are natural or self-evident. They live as invisible beings in invisible places, but they can be anywhere and their voices can be heard anywhere. Whether intended or not, they make or shake various notions that people take for granted or self-evident. As they re the beings on the border being pushed out, they frequently raise questions about the core notions that make up the modern times such as the nation, language, and literature. Therefore the questions they raise are so essential and fundamental: Is the nation really a solid system consisting of the same history and language? And can no one really escape from that system? Does the language they use have the same attributes? Does the language only contribute to facilitating communication? Rather, does it work as a means of discrimination and exclusion? Is the literature in that language really true to people s universal feelings? So a literature is an unquestionable system? The questions they raise are sometimes uncomfortable and embarrassing, but we should look them straight and listen to what they say.
