A Study on Development of Rest Area by Expressways Around Metropolitan Area

Firstly, the handy rest area in the seoul ring expressway where the site for development is insufficient needs a small-and-medium-size discount store, drive-in facility, and garage for the busy office workers during their rush hour. Secondly, the future rest area must reflect the improved level of consciousness of urban residents and be developed as a multi-purpose rest area that can offer various services in a clean environment. Such other facilities as large discount stores, offices, and accommodations can also be considered. Thirdly, the transportation system such as the transit bus, fast and convenient self-serve station, unmanned handy rest area for a certain period of time, drive-in facility, and unmanned hi-pass system are recommended for the urban workers commuting to Seoul as a result of the separation of house and working place in the metropolitan area. Fourthly, vehicle garages and office facilities for the work efficiency of the users of metropolitan expressway and seoul ring expressway are required. Based on the results, this study suggests the developmental improvements of the rest area considering the expressway characteristics within the metropolitan area where there is the separation of house and working place as a result of suburbanization and postindustrialization.
