  • 2

The mountain system of the Korean Peninsula was investigated by two groups of geographical scholars; the one that inherited geographical studies based on the theory of divination based on topography as well as traditional geography, and the other that researched geology and topography based on modern geography since the 20th century. The traditional geography said that flow of the mountains could not be severed by that of the water to classify it by rivers and mountains, and that border of high land of basin was divided by mountains based on Yongmaekgwan. Modern geography researched not only development of tectonic structure on which topographic features relied, but also mountain system from point of view of geography based on topographic structure. This study cognized one of alive earth lump of national land where the Korean ancestors lived lives for a long time, and it examined theory of mountains and waters from point of view of theory of divination based on topography that discovered wisdom of the life. First, mountains was thought not to be absolute and/or fixed but to be relative and movable. Second, both mountains and water basically consisted of one thing to have same start and end. Third, mountains and water were divided by thought of divination based on topography, and Taegeuk of Yin and Yang theory of Juyeok made change to produce Yangeui to let Yangeui make change and produce Sasang. Drawing from point of view of theory of divination based on topography was used to understand principle of production of mountains and stream of water and to investigate formation principle of mountains. This study made use of not only mountains and water theory of divination based on topography but also formation principle of mountains and stream of water to set up base of mountains system of the Korean Peninsula.
