A Study on the Development of Innovative City and the Change of Population Structure in the Region

Korea is pursuing the development of innovative cities in order to solve the concentration problem in the metropolitan area that emerged during the period of high growth. The main purpose is to develop innovative cities by local area, transfer public institutions, and develop localized industries. Most of the innovative cities have completed the transfer of public institutions by 2017. This study analyzed the effect of existing urban areas on the development of innovative cities. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the development of innovative cities has increased the population of the whole region but the regional imbalance is intensifying. Especially, the aged population growth in the existing urban areas is getting worse and the concentration of innovative cities in the housing available population has appeared. Therefore, the direction of the development of the innovative city in the future will need to find a way for the entire region to develop in a balanced manner through linkage with existing urban areas.
