The Effect of the Physical Housing Environment on Self-esteem of the Middle-age adults

Korean society suffers from various social problems due to housing environment problems. Especially It remains one of the most sensitive factors for the middle-age adults. However, the housing welfare system that can solve this problem is poor. In addition, studies on housing environment problems have been conducted in a narrow view. The physical housing environment provides physical comfort but also plays a role in economic and social status. Therefore it has a great influence on the middle-age adults in modern society. The decline in self-esteem of middle-age adults causes social problems such as depression or suicide attempts. Therefore, it is required to study concerning the effect of housing environment on self-esteem of middle-age adults. The study is largely conducted as theoretical discussion and empirical verification. Through the theoretical discussion, the 3 hypotheses were deduced ‘self-esteem of the middle-age adults is reduced as the living space is narrowed’, ‘self-esteem of the middle-age adults will be lower as the necessary facility of the residence is lacking’, and ‘self-esteem of middle-age adults will be lower as the structure-function of the residence is lacking’. these deduced hypotheses showed the empirical verification through statistical analysis. They supported the 2 hypotheses as statistically significant;‘self-esteem of the middle-age adults is reduced as the living space is narrowed’, ‘self-esteem of middle-age adults will be lower as the structure-function of the residence is lacking’. Therefore, The political solution was considered for wide residential space to keep self-esteem and environment maintenance was considered at national level for proper residential structure-function and environment.
