이 연구의 목적은 남북한의 언어차이가 남북한 아동청소년의 읽기와 관련된 인지능력과 어휘지식에의 차이에 영향을 줄 수 있는지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 남북한 언어의 차이를 살펴보고, 읽기능력과 관련된 핵심 인지능력과 어휘와 관련된 문헌들을 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 남북한 두 언어 간의 차이는 상당했으며, 어휘, 의미론, 음운론, 그리고 맞춤법에서 남북한 언어에 큰 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 이러한 두 언어 간의 차이점은 대부분의 경우 맞춤법에 반영되어 있음을 알 수 있었고, 이러한 맞춤법의 차이는 결국, 읽기능력과 관련한 핵심인지기능에 영향을 미쳐 처리 오류를 유발할 가능성이 있음을 살펴 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 국내학교에 재학 중인 북한이탈학생들의 읽기지도에 시사점을 제공할 수 있으며, 교사에게 정보를 제공하고, 교사가 더 나은 교수법과 교실 활동을 개발하는 데 기초자료로 사용될 수 있을 것이다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 북한이탈학생들의 문해발달을 지원할 시사점을 제시하였다.

The study investigated linguistic differences between South and North Korea related to psychological factors for North Korean students in South Korean schools. The two Korean languages are often mistaken for the same language. However, the linguistic differences between the two languages are significant. The areas of major linguistic differences between the two languages include the lexicon, semantics, phonology, and orthography. In many cases, these differences are reflected in their orthography. These orthographic differences in turn contribute to language performance errors. Thus, it is necessary to assess the relationship between language divergence in South and North Korea and reading outcomes among North Korean students in South Korea. Its findings carry important practical implications for Korean children’s literacy instruction. They may inform classroom instruction and help develop better teaching approaches, methods, and activities.
