Suggestions Regarding Universal Design Direction for User-centered Library Space and Furniture Plans

The major functions and services of libraries have rapidly changed, and accordingly, the design of their space and furniture also requires modifications. This study proposes a user-centered design direction by considering the design trends and guidelines of library space and furniture. It conducted a literature review focusing on content analysis and divided its research method into an analysis of trends in space and furniture design and a content analysis of design guidelines. As a result, the trend of library space and furniture design considering users can be explained by such concepts as openness/comfort, flexibility, diversity, convergence/efficiency, sustainability, identity, small scale/privacy, and consideration for children. This study found that the core of guidelines for a universal design application consisted of accessibility, diversity, flexibility, intuition, functionality, and supportability.
