한국 근대지형도의 소장 현황과 조선지형도(제2차지형도)의 특징

Modern Korean Topographical Maps and the Characteristics of the Joseon Topographic Map - With a Focus on the National Museum of Korea, Collections of the Stanford University Libraries, and Seoul National University Libraries -

본 연구의 목적은 그동안 연구되지 않은 한국근대지형도의 소장처를 정리하고 이 중 조선지형도(제2차지형도)의 지도사적 가치와 이를 활용하여 역사지리환경을 복원하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 스탠포드대학 도서관과 국립중앙박물관, 서울대학교 중앙도서관을 중심으로 한국 근대지형도의 소장 현황을 조사하였다. 다음으로는 세 기관 중 국립중앙박물관에 소장되어 있는 구한말지형도이후 제작된 조선지형도의 지도사적 의의와 역사지리환경을 복원하는데 초점을 두었다. 역사지리환경 중에 행정구역 경계를 중심으로 대동여지도, 조선지형도, 조선기본도와 비교하였다. 본 연구의 의의는 첫째 그동안 알려지지 않았던 세 기관의 한국 근대지형도의 소장현황을 조사하여 목록화한 것이고, 둘째, 조선지형도를 활용한 행정구역 복원을 통해 전근대 지리환경에 대해 보다 가까운 시기, 정확한 정보를 획득하고 역사지리데이터베이스룰 구축한 것이다. 이는 100여년 전의 한국의 역사지리환경을 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 의미를 둘 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to look at the previously unstudied modern Korean topographical maps. More specifically, its intention is to restore the historical value of the Joseon Topographic Map (the second topographic map) and the historical geographic environment in which the map was created. In order to achieve this, map collections at the Stanford University Libraries, Seoul National University Libraries, and the National Museum of Korea were examined. Next, of the three institutions, the Joseon Topographic Map held at the National Museum of Korea was studied in more detail for its historical meaning, and for the restoration of its historical geographic environment. For the purpose of restoring the historical geographic environment, administrative borders as delineated in Daedong yeojido and the Joseon Basic Map (the third topographic map) were compared. This study is significant because firstly, it reveals the current status of the collections of modern topographic maps of Korea at these three institutions which have not been widely known; secondly, these maps make it possible to examine the historical geographic environment of Korea a century ago; and finally, the restoration using the Joseon Topographic Map allows for a closer timeframe and more accurate information regarding the pre-modern geographical environment.
