A Study on the Function of Saj‘ in the Maqāmāt

마까마(Maqāmāt)의 가장 큰 특징은 운이 있는 산문 즉, 사즈으로 쓰였다는 것이다. 마까마에 대한 대부분의 선행 연구는 의미론적 관점과 아랍 문학사에서 마까마의 위상에 관한 것이다. 사즈으 자체에 대한 분석 연구는 많지 않다. 이 연구는 하마다니(al-Hamadhani)의 마까마에서 saj 의 기능을 조사한다. 이를 위해 하마다니의 51개 마까마를 제목에 따라 분류한 후 대표적인 마까마를 제시하고, 사즈으의 기능을 도출한다. 사즈으는 운의 하모니와 소리의 반복을 통해 듣는 이에게 아름다움을 선사한다. 그것의 아름다움은 형식주의 연구의 결과이며, 이 글은 사즈으가 수행하는 의미적 기능을 조명한다. 마까마의 제목 분류에 따라 아제르바이잔의 마까마 , 자히즈의 마까마 , 버터의 마까마 , 조언의 마까마 의 원문이 제시되었고, 전체 이야기의 맥락에서 사즈으를 분석한다. 사즈으의 대부분은 무랏싸으와 무타와진의 사즈으 형태로 등장했고, 사즈으는 장소와 인물의 성격을 묘사하고 화자의 연설에서 주장을 정당화하는 데 사용된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 특히 주인공이 이야기의 중심 메시지를 전달하기 위해 사용한다. 따라서 사즈으는 이야기의 긴장감을 높이거나 인물을 풍자하는 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 글은 하마다니 마까마의 사즈으를 분석하고 강조하여 중세 아랍 산문에 대한 이해와 관심을 높이고자 한다.

Saj‘ is rhymed prose in Arabic literature, especially in the maqāmāt genre. Most prior studies of maqāmāt focus on a semantic perspective and its status in the history of Arabic literature. However, there are few studies on saj‘ itself. This study examines the function of saj‘ in al-Hamadhani’s Maqāmāt. To do so, the titles of the fifty-one episodes of the Maqāmāt of al-Hamadhani were categorized, and four representative Maqāmāt were selected. Saj‘ delights listeners’ ears through the harmony of rhymes and the repetition of sounds. Studying its beauty is the realm of formalism research. This study explores the semantic aspects of its function. The four original texts of The Maqamah of Azerbaijan, The Maqamah of al-Jahiz, The Maqamah of Butter and The Maqamah of Advice were presented to analyze saj‘ based on the context of their stories. Most of the saj‘ was in the forms of al-Murassau and al-Mutawajin. Saj‘ was mostly used to describe places and characters or to justify assertions in a speaker’s speech, especially to convey the central message of the story delivered by the protagonist. Therefore, saj‘ plays the role of heightening the tension of events or satirizing characters. This study ultimately seeks to enhance understanding of and interest in medieval Arabic prose by shedding light on saj‘ of the Maqāmāt.
