The Crisis of Information Ecology and the Important Tasks of Christian Education

다양하게 발달되고 있는 테크놀로지는 새로운 삶의 위기들과 문제들을 가져다주고 있으며, 새로운 교육적인 과제들을 우리에게 던져 주고 있다. 급격한 사회적인 변화에 직면하여 테크놀로지를 “피할 수 없는 진보”라고 찬양하는 사람들이 있는가 하면, 테크놀로지의 침입적인 영향이 우리의 삶을 오히려 역행시킬 것이라고 주장하는 사람들도 있다. 테크놀로지의 긍정적인 면을 부각시키든지 부정적인 면을 부각시키든지 테크놀로지의 발달의 ‘불가피성’을 강조하다 보면 인간의 창조적인 힘과 변혁의 가능성을 무기력하게 만든다. 그러므로 테크놀로지의 수동적인 대상으로서가 아니라, 테크놀로지를 개발하고 사용하는 주체로서의 인간 이해에 근거하여 정보 생태계가 직면한 위기들을 직시하는 것이 필요하다. 특별히 새로운 정보 테크놀로지의 개발은 많은 사람들의 삶에 새로운 가능성과 위기감을 가져오고 있다. 테크놀로지의 발달이 삶의 전 영역에 새로운 변화들을 만들어 가는 과정에서 많은 사람들이 가장 심각하게 경험하게 되는 위기들은 바로 자아 정체성의 위기와 가치의 혼란, 그리고 공동체적 삶에 대한 위기들이다.

New information technology has rapidly changed human life and provided new experiences and environment to human beings. It is true that information technology is widely valued, however, there is a greater threat to personal privacy and control over personal lives. People have already experienced many negative effects of information technology to human lives. Therefore, we have to use technology fruitfully by engaging their own values and commitments. Information ecology is a metaphor that emphasizes a system of people, practices, values and technologies in a particular local environment. Faced with this social phenomenon, Christian communities need to ask how they should understand the positive and negative effects of information technology and how to help educators to acknowledge the important tasks of Christian education. In this new information age, people have experienced the crises of identity, value and community. People who lived with one name and one body and formed relatively unitary and stable identities have began to experience multiple selves through unlimitedly extended possibilities between real world and cyber world. In cyberspace, people can act in uninhibited ways when they think no one can find out who they really are. It is hard to deny that anonymity in cyberspace has a down side and can bring out some very troubling behavior. Cyberspace also provides the possibility of new and diverse communities. Christian education needs to encourage the creative process to search for new potentials and possibilities of self and to empower them to develop more multiple and flexible identities. Christian education also needs to help people to awaken their moral sensibilities and responsibilities by developing critical thinking and wisdom. With these efforts, Christian education needs to provide new visions of virtual faith communities in which people can communicate and empower one another toward ever-expanding possibilities of human interaction.
