영어 어휘학습 전략사용과 어휘지식 하위요소에 관한 연구

The study on the use of vocabulary learning strategies and sub-characteristics of vocabulary knowledge

목적 본 연구는 학습자들이 사용하는 어휘 학습 전략을 살펴보고 이 학습 전략이 어휘지식에 미치는 영향, 그리고 각 학습 전략이 지식의 하위요소에 해당하는 영역에 대해 알아보는 데 목적이 있었다. 방법 연구 참여자들은 부산 소재 대학교 교양수업을 듣는 72명의 대학생이었고, Schmitt(1997)의 어휘 학습 전략 설문지가 사용되었다. 연구 참여자들의 어휘지식 수준에 따른 어휘 학습 전략 사용의 차이를 알아보고자 Laufer와 Nation(1999)의 Vocabulary Size Test를 실시하여 그 결과에 따라 상 집단과 하 집단으로 나누어 그 결과를 비교하였다. 결과 어휘학습전략이 어휘지식에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 다중회귀분석을 실시하였고 그에 따른 결과를 바탕으로 교육적 함의를 찾고자 하였다. 학습자들이 가장 많이 사용한 어휘 학습전략은 단어의 품사를 확인하는 것으로 나타났고 다음으로 사전을 활용하여 단어의 의미를 파악하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 학습자들이 사용한 어휘 학습 전략이 어휘 지식의 하위요소에 해당하는 영역을 살펴본 결과 학습자들은 형태 학습에 가장 집중하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 학습자들이 사용한 각 어휘학습 전략이 어휘지식의 하위요소 중 어떤 영역에 속하는지 알아보고 그에 따른 어휘전략 지도에 대해 논의하였다.

Objectives The present study aims to explore the effect of vocabulary learning strategies on learner’s vocabulary learning and the sub-characteristics of vocabulary knowledge. Methods Seventy two students from University participated in the study, and the vocabulary strategy questionnaire of Schmitt(1997) was used. The participants were asked to take a Vocabulary Size Test by Laufer & Nation (1999) to be divided according to their level of vocabulary proficiency. Results The result of using of vocabulary learning strategies was compared by each group and multiple regression analysis was conducted to reveal the relationship between using vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary knowledge. The most popular strategy that participants used was to check the part of speech and to use dictionary to figure out the meaning of the new words. In addition, the strategies tha participants made the best use of were focused on learning a form of vocabulary. Conclusions Based on the result, the educational implication was discussed.
