다문화 사회와 기독교 대학의 교양 교육

Postconventional Faith Education for Christian Liberal Arts in a Multicultural Society

본 연구의 목적은 다문화 사회에 적절한 기독교 대학의 교양 교육의 새로운 모형을 탐구하는 것이다. 기독교 대학에 관한 기존의 연구는 종교가 개인의 신앙 차원에 제한된 사적인 영역에 머문 근대적 패러다임 속에서 진행되었다. 그러나 본 연구는 20세기 후반, 기독교의 신앙의 공적인 차원을 강조하는 탈사유화의 차원에서 기독교 대학의 교양 교육을 조명하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기독교 대학을 (1) 교회 혹은 기독교의 유산과 연관을 맺고, (2) 기독교의 이념과 비전을 기관의 목적으로 명시하며, (3) 기독교적 자아정체감을 구현하는 교육과정을 필수과목으로 채택한 고등교육기관으로 정의했다. 기독교 대학의 주된 외부환경으로 제시된 다문화 사회 속에서는 다양한 가치와 신념, 그리고 규범이 교차하여, (1) 주류 문화와 비주류 문화의 긴장, (2) 세대 간의 갈등(generation gap), (3) 남녀평등의 문제(gender issues)와 같은 사회적 쟁점들이 발견된다. 따라서 기독교 대학의 교양 교육은 다문화 사회에서 발생하는 성별, 지역, 계층 간의 차이를 고려하고 소수의 인종 혹은 종족의 문화를 배려하고 존중하는 차원에서의 교육 활동이 요청된다. 본 연구에서 다문화 사회의 기독교 대학의 교양 교육의 대안적 모형으로 제시하는 탈인습적 신앙 교육은 기독교의 전통과 다른 신념과 가치, 그리고 규범과의 상호주관적인 관계성, 평등성, 그리고 개방성을 지향한다. 이러한 상호의존적이며 상호호혜적인 관계를 통해, 기독교의 전통과 도덕적 규범을 새롭게 재구성하고, 다양한 신념과 가치, 그리고 규범과 조화하는 대안적 교육의 모형을 창출하게 된다. 결국 탈인습적 신앙 교육은 기독교적인 신앙의 빛에서, 현실 사회의 모순과 한계를 극복하고, 기독교 대학 구성원의 경험 속에서 작용하는 하나님 사랑의 신념의 형태로서, 세상 속에서 하나님의 나라를 구현하는 원동력이 되는 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to explore a new model for Christian liberal arts. I defines Christian liberal arts as educational activities of Christian universities for their members to achieve Christian personality and social responsibility. In a modern society, it is difficult for Christian university to persist its faithful identity due to the privatization of religion. However, a recent phenomenon in the world as the “deprivatization” of religion provides Christian university with the possibility of a public function. Thus, my study focuses on public as well as private roles of Christian liberal arts in a multicultural society. I regards multicultural society as external environment of Christian university where various beliefs, norms and values coexist. In a multicultural society, there are lots of tensions between majority and minority, male and female, and old generation and young generation and so on. Thus, multicultural education of Christian liberal arts should moves toward softening these tensions or struggles. In this study, I suggest postconventional faith model as alternative education for Christian liberal arts in a multicultural society. Postconventional faith education (PFE) demonstrates public as well as private roles of Christian university. PFE achieves relational, equal, and open aims and purposes of Christian liberal arts through intersubjective and interrelated dialogue between Christian tradition and beliefs, values, and norms of other traditions. In this point, PFE is an alternative model of Christian liberal arts that helps Christians understand and critique their own tradition to move beyond the given norms and values in a multicultural environment.
