This paper is concerned with three different types of so-initial constructions: the So-Aux-Subj Construction, the So-Subj-Aux Construction, and the So-Aux-Clause Construction. It will be argued that the three constructions use different types of so. The So-Aux-Subj Construction has topic so, the So-Subj-Aux Construction has emphatic so, and the So-Aux-Clause Construction has positive polarity so. This proposal sheds light on various peculiar patterns of the three constructions.
