An Educational Ministry for Children through the Community of Faith-Enculturation Paradigm: The Case of G Church

본 논문의 목표는 학교식-수업 모델을 수행하는 G 교회 교육목회를 위해서, 존 웨스터호프 (1933-현재) 시각에서 건설적이고 실천적인 제안들을 탐색하는 것이다. 웨스터호프의 모델은 기독교교육의 중심으로 신앙공동체를 강조한다. 이를 기초로, 본 논문은 G 교회의 어린이 교육목회에 대한 간략한 개요와 문제점을 고찰한다. 또한 기독교교육의 컨텍스트(context)를 넓히고 신앙공동체 안에서 삶의 모든 부분을 강조하는 웨스터호프 패러다임의 주요 구성요소들을 설명한다. 그리고, G 교회의 컨텍스트에서 웨스터호프 패러다임의 타당성을 살펴봄으로써, G 교회의 교육 사역에 기여하는 ―소속감, 목적을 지닌 상호작용, 리더십과 관계성을 위한 잠재적 교육과정, 혼합 예배, 신앙 구축 이야기― 실천적 제안들을 모색한다. 이러한 웨스터호프의 신앙-문화화공동체 패러다임은 현대 컨텍스트 안에서 G 교회뿐만 아니라 한국교회에 큰 공헌을 할 것이다.

This essay aims to explore constructive, practical suggestions from the perspective of John Westerhoff III (1933 – present) for the educational ministry of G Church dominated in the schooling-instructional model. Westerhoff’s model emphasizes the faith community at the heart of Christian education. On the basis, this article makes a brief overview and examines a growing concern about the children’s educational ministry at G Church. It also investigates crucial components of Westerhoff’s community of faith-enculturation paradigm, which widens the context of Christian education and concentrates on every part of life in the faith community. Exploring the relevance of Westerhoff’s paradigm in the context of G Church, it makes helpful, practical suggestions that contribute to the educational ministry of G Church, such as a sense of belonging, purposeful interaction, the hidden curriculum for leadership and relationship, the blended worship services, and faith-building storytelling. Westerhoff’s model teaches how G Church should faithfully carry on the work of the educational ministry for children through the faith community approach to Christian education.
