The American Dream in Martin Scorsese’s Films

마틴 스콜세지는 뉴 아메리칸 시네마의 대표적인 작가 중 한 명으로 미국의 영화 제작에 지속적으로 영향을 미치고 있는 감독이다. 필자는 본 논문에서 1970년대로부터 1990년대에 걸쳐 제작된 스콜세지의 영화들이 아메리칸 드림이라는 주제를 탐구하는 양상을 단계별로 고찰하고자 한다. 먼저, 스콜세지가 <택시 드라이버>와 <코미디의 왕>에서 1980년대 신보수주의로의 회귀를 선택한 미국 사회의 불안감을 반영하는 트래비스와 루퍼트라는 인물들을 통해 아메리칸 드림이라는 미국 신화의 타락에 대한 불안을 포착함을 밝힌다. 다음으로, <성난 황소>와 <좋은 친구들>을 통해 아메리칸 드림의 성취와 그 성취 뒤의 타락상을 주요등장인물들의 내면 풍경을 조명함으로써 살펴본다. 이 두 영화의 주인공인 제이크와 헨리는 공통적으로 도덕성을 상실했지만 자기 성찰이 결여된 인물들로 묘사되고 있다. 끝으로, 필자는 스콜세지가 <컬러 오브 머니>와 <케이프 피어>를 통해 아메리칸 드림의 타락에 대한 성찰의 실마리를 제공함을 주장하고자 한다. 아메리칸 드림에 대한 성찰은 과거 스콜세지 영화의 중요한 주제이면서 동시에 그의 최근 영화들을 관통하는 주제로서 여전히 유효하다.

Martin Scorsese has been one of the leading directors of New American Cinema, and continues to influence American filmmaking. In this essay, I would like to examine how Scorsese’s films from the 1970s to 1990s explore the theme of the American Dream. First of all, I point out that Scorsese expresses his anxiety about the corruption of the myth called the American Dream through Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1982). Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin, the heroes in the two films are figures reflecting the anxiety of American society, which leads to the neo-conservatism in America during the 1980s. Next, I examine the achievement of the American Dream and the corruption after it by illuminating the inner landscape of the main characters in two Scorsese films: Raging Bull (1980) and Goodfellas (1990). The main characters of these two films, Jake La Motta and Henry Hill, are portrayed as characters who have lost their morality, but lack self-reflection. Lastly, I argue that Scorsese provides clues to reflecting on the degeneration of the American Dream through The Color of Money (1986) and Cape Fear (1991). Reflecting on the American Dream is an important theme of the past Scorsese films, and at the same time remains valid as a theme that penetrates his recent films.
