Acquisition of the English Article System through Form-Focused Instruction*

The purpose of this study is to explore the effective teaching method of the English article system through Form-Focused Instruction (FFI). To this end, this study aims to investigate whether FFI is effective in acquiring the English article system in a Business English Composition class and how learners perceive FFI in the Business English Composition class. Participants in this study were 13 first-year college students who took the Business English Composition class. In the writing class, input enhancement, output enhancement, and corrective feedback of FFI were applied. As an input reinforcement activity, materials highlighted in colored bold fonts were provided for a visual attention activity, and question-and-answer activities with students were conducted for an output reinforcement activity. Corrective feedback was provided immediately during the class after the student’s writing was completed. The pre- and post-test results of this study showed the application of FFI in the Business Composition class was effective in acquiring the English article system. Accuracy was improved overall, especially in the use of the. In addition, the survey revealed that the learners considered the FFI positively and preferred immediate corrective feedback the most among FFI activities. Therefore, it is suggested that FFI be applied to English writing classes to improve writing accuracy.
