Needs Analysis of English Communication Courses: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study

목적 본 연구에서는 대학 영어 수업에 대한 요구 분석을 통해 영어 학습자의 요구를 분석하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 전남 소재 대학생 80명을 대상으로 요구 분석에 대한 설문지 조사와 인터뷰를 통해 양적⋅질적 자료 수집 및 분석을 하는 혼합연구 방법을 사용하였다. 결과 학생들의 다양한 측면의 요구들을 보여주었다. 첫째, 대학생들의 영어 향상을 위해서 역량 강화 수업이 필요하다. 둘째, 대학생들의 영어 기능 습득을 위해서 영어 기능 융합 수업이 중요함을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 대학생들은 교수자로부터 영어의 문법과 어휘에 대한 교정 및 피드백을 원하였다. 결론 본 연구는 대학생들의 영어 실력 및 전문성 향상을 위한 기대에 부합하기 위해서 대학교 강의에 대한 교수자의 요구 분석의 중요성을 제시하였다.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to address the significance of needs analysis at language courses in higher education. Methods This study conducted a mixed method needs analysis to explore 80 college students’ needs regarding the improvement of the new course at a medium-sized national university. Data were collected through survey questionnaires and interviews within one semester. Results The results revealed diverse aspects of students’ needs. First, this study showed that competency-based language instruction is essential for the students’ language development. Second, the integrated skill instruction was necessary for the improvement of language skills. Third, the students expected feedback on their English grammar and vocabulary usage from their instructors. Conclusions This study implied the significance of conducting needs analysis to meet students’ expectations of language learning as professional development and growth in a multidisciplinary way.
