The purpose of this study is to explore online teaching experiences of secondary English teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. To accomplish this goal, qualitative research was carried out by conducting interviews with five secondary English teachers. The findings showed that the teachers were not prepared for the full-scaled online education. In addition, they had difficulties due to shortage of devices and infrastructure, poor quality of learning platforms and connection failure while teaching online. On the other hand, by designing and implementing online classes, teachers had opportunities to explore the potential of online education. While teaching online, teachers also had time to rediscover the values of face-to-face classes, which cannot be replaced by online classes. Online teaching experiences also affected teachers’ perception of their roles as they had to acknowledge that they were no longer expected to be the sole giver of knowledge and need to think about new roles as a facilitator, an organizer, and a learning counselor. The result of this study may provide basic research data for improving online education and preparing teachers for different types of changes in educational settings due to unforeseen circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic.
