Development of an instructional model for English chant in elementary school

This study develops an instructional model for English chanting in elementary school. Chanting is an activity that can heighten students’ interest in English and help them learn rhythm and patterns in English, as well as communication skills. According to the survey administered in this study, however, chanting has not been properly used in elementary schools due to the absence of a systematic instructional model. The researchers in this study developed a such a model that can be applied in elementary schools, thereby contributing to the organization of an environment where teachers and students can learn how to chant properly. To evaluate its validity, the instructional model was examined by seven English education experts, all English teachers, and was evaluated for its suitability through a pilot class in an elementary school. The result was that the chant model had high validity as an instructional model and a positive effect on the students interest, participation and self-confidence in the class as well. An instructional model for English chanting will help direct students’ learning and teachers’ pedagogy in the elementary English classroom.
