  • 176

This study explores what commonalities and differences between the original Korean poetry and English poetry in the areas of image, rhyme, and emotion of Kim, Sowol s poetry. Also this study discusses the developmental direction of Kim, Sowol s poetry into English poetry. The object of analysis was three pieces of poems of So-wol Kim; Azaleas, Mountain Flowers, and Invocation. In addition, it was analyzed which poem translation properly reflected the aesthetic effect of Kim, So-wol s poem. As a result, some translators are lean toward translations that provide information about the original poetry. Others are loyal to original form by reflecting a lot of poetic sensibility and aesthetic value. To properly reflect the aesthetic effects of poetry, translators should sufficiently know the cultural background of the society where poetry was created, have literary skills and nurture critical ability to grasp poetry deeply as well as have foreign language skills.
