『어우야담』에 담긴 지적경험과 서사장치

The intellectual experience and narrative device reflected in Eouyadam

野談은 조선후기에 유행한 한문서사 양식으로, 柳夢寅의 『於于野談』은 筆記의 성격이 강하지만 우리나라 최초 야담집이라 평가된다. 본고에서는 『어우야담』에 실린 일부 작품을 선별하여 거기에 담긴 지적경험과 서사장치에 대해 살펴보았다. 특히, ‘差異’와 ‘是非’의 間隙을 넘나드는 이야기에 초점을 맞춰 당시의 사실적 인정물태와 서사에서 엿보이는 문학적 장치에 관해 논하였다. 다시 말해, 조선후기 민중의 관심과 민간의 物態에서 채집되어 『어우야담』에 수록된 작품을 통해 필기와 야담의 양면성을 탐구하였다. 그 결과, 『어우야담』은 다양한 관점에서 지적경험을 담아냈는데, 한편으로 조선과 중국의 차이를 인정하고, 관심과 기록 영역을 歐羅巴[Europe]와 流球國[오키나와] 등 세계로 관심을 확장함으로써 당대 지식인으로서 필기적 면모를 뚜렷이 보여주었다. 또 다른 한편으로는 대화체를 활용하여 등장인물의 서로 다른 시각차를 드러내고, 속담을 인용하여 당시 사회의 잘잘못을 비판하는 등 서사장치를 부각시킴으로써 야담적 면모가 두드러졌다. 요컨대 어우야담 에는 당시의 지적경험을 투영한 필기적 면모와, 서사장치가 부각된 야담적 면모가 잘 어우러져 있다.

Yadam is a popular Korean narrative style in the late Joseon Dynasty, and the Eouyadam written by Yumongin has a strong character of Pilgi, but is evaluated as the first Yadam collection in Korea. In this paper, we selected some of the works published in Eouyadam and examined the intellectual experiences and narrative devices contained therein. In particular, focusing on the story that crosses the gap between ‘difference’ and ‘wrong’, we discussed the social conditions of the time and the literary devices seen in the narrative. In other words, through the works collected from the people’s interest and civilian state in the late Joseon Dynasty, and reflected in Eouyadam, we explored the two-sidedness of writing and talking. As a result, Eouyadam conveyed the human natures and social conditions from various perspectives. On the one hand, by reflecting the exchange situation between Joseon and China, and expanding the area of interest and recording to the world such as Europe[歐羅巴] and Okinawa[流球國]. As an intellectual at the time, he clearly showed his handwriting side. On the other hand, the narrative aspect was remarkable by highlighting the narrative device, such as revealing the different perspectives of the characters using dialogue style and criticizing the wrongs of society at the time by quoting proverbs. In short, Eouyadam has a good harmony between the writing aspect that reflects the intellectual experiences of the time, and the Yadam aspect emphasizing the narrative devices.
