William James, who lived in a time when the desire for societal progress through science was strong, thought that the concept of causality in science was not always applicable to human life, even though many intellectuals believed in scientific methods and that scientific methods were linked to human behavior. James philosophy was a philosophy of life focused on human experience, and his philosophy deals with the various experiences that humans face in their lives and the moral and social problems that they confront. In particular, James concept of ‘freedom’ is thought to have meaningful implications for modern society and education today. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look at James idea of freedom and find the educational meaning of his thought. I first analyze James concept of freedom. More specifically, I look at how his idea of freedom is changing as time goes on. I then attempt to examine what James concept of freedom means to education and find the implications for Korean education.
