This study examines the conflict and coexistence between good and evil in Kate DiCamillo’s Flora & Ulysses. This study looks at the family problems and lack of love in the novel, and brings about questions on how the protagonists resolve the conflict between good and evil inside of their minds. The paper analyzes how the main characters find love and restore family relationships by forming a consensus on each other’s conflicts in the fantasy space. Evil fights against good, and the main characters open their eyes to reality by finding the source of evil and solving problems in a fantasy space. The root of evil is from a lack of love, good exists in the bottom of our heart, and we realize that good and evil coexist in the people’s minds. Fantasy opens the eyes to reality by drawing out the desires, conflicts, and struggles that are hidden right in front of us. The novel delivers the message that fantasy can maximize the empathy of the characters and restore relationships in reality, even though it is not a huge and grand fantasy space.
