The purpose of this paper examines how to understand and utilize the coordinating structure of English learners in Korea, which is an EFL environment, through a survey of 142 students taking liberal arts courses at J University located in small and medium-sized cities. In this paper, coordinating conjunctions and, or, but, yet are treated as single conjunctions, both ... and, either ... or, neither ... nor as multi-word conjunctions. This was to help students understand that the sentences with multi-word conjunctions are also coordinating structures, because students taking liberal arts classes at J University first think of sentences with single conjunctions when they say coordinating structure. As a result of a survey about the ordinal structure preferred by students taking liberal arts courses at J University when writing or having a conversation, preference was found in the order of and, or, but, and yet in the ordinal structure using a single conjunction. And in the coordinating structure using the multi-word conjunction, the preference was shown in the order of both ... and, either ... or, neither ... nor. Analyzing these results, it can be seen that learners who use English or Korean or their target language tend to prefer vocabulary with positive meanings to words with negative meanings.
