Suggestions on the Criteria of Headwords for Northeast Asian Nomad Music

The purpose of this study was to examine the criteria of dictionary headwords for nomad music in an effort to facilitate the compilation project of an unabridged dictionary for Northeast Asian nomad culture by the Institute for Mongolian Studies at Dankook University. This institute has implemented this project by respectively putting an yearlong research effort into nomad culture, nomad material culture, nomad life, nomad faith and the nomad arts in the order listed, and nomad music is one of the fields of the nomad arts that the institute has researched in the final year of the project. The headwords of nomad music were classified into three based on this researcher s previous study on the classification system of Mongolian traditional music after earlier studies on dictionaries of Mongolia, China, Russia and Japan were analyzed: ① genre, ② musical instruments, ③ names and others. And the indexes for these sections were prepared. The geographic scope of nomad music in Northeast Asia was confined in this study to the northeast region of Asia including Mongolia. This study especially focused on Mongolian music, and 153 types of headwords were put in order, which included the headwords related to the music of nomad in Manchuria. There appeared several problems while the headwords of nomad music were selected. First, there was some overlap between the headwords of nomad music and those of nomad culture, especially oral literature. As religious music is likely to overlap with nomad faith as well, more discreet selection efforts are required. Second, there might be another overlap between nomad music and nomad dance in the section of the nomad arts, since dance involves instrumental accompaniment or songs. Finally, the index of names was prepared by centering around Mongolia and Inner Mongolia, but that was ruled out because there was some room for improvement.
