Specialized Industries of the 21 Provinces (Aimags) of Mongolia

The Mongolian government’s attention on its provinces’ industrial and economic development, foreign countries’ desires to make a direct investment and cooperate with Mongolian provinces as well as the Mongolian provincial governments’ efforts to promote foreign direct investment and foreign countries’ economic cooperation in their provinces raise questions about the Mongolian provinces’ specialized industries. This paper, therefore, examines the specialized industries of the 21 provinces of Mongolia. The paper examines specialized industries of the Mongolian provinces in terms of locally specialized industry and locally related industry as they represent specialized industries of a region. It uses a location quotient when examining the locally specialized industry and a local specific and traditional product as a criterion when examining the locally related industry. The paper finds that each Mongolian province has specialized industries and the specialized industries of some provinces are the same.
