Orthography of Modern Mongolian- Focusing on the ‘Rules of Mongolian Script’ and the ‘Rules of Reduced Vowel’ -

This thesis analyzed, summarized, and introduced the contents of ‘orthography(zo’v bichgiin durem)’ in the newly-revised Mongolian Orthography Dictionary(Mongol xelnii zo’v bichix du’rmiin juramlasan toli)published in 2018. In the process, the nature and characteristics of the newly-revised Mongolian orthography were also examined. Without examining all the orthography including total eight chapters and 64 articles due to the limited pages, this thesis mainly examined Chapter 1 & 2 such as ‘Rules of Mongolian Script’ and ‘Rules of Reduced Vowel’. As the concrete and overall contents of Mongolian orthography have never been systematically introduced in Korean, the first analysis, summary, and introduction of them would be academically and historically significant. Moreover, as this thesis handles the revised Mongolian(Cyrillic modern Mongolian) orthography unified together with the legal status in 2018, the summary and introduction of it would be very important in the aspect of providing the basic data essential to majors in Mongolian and Mongolian studies, and other relevant researchers. In the process of summarizing/introducing the Mongolian orthography, some ideas were obtained as follows. ▪ Before the newly-revised orthography dictionary was published in 2018, it was very confusing as the rules were not unified due to the individually-published orthography and the personal opinions/ compilation policies were reflected. Owing to the unified orthography with the new-legal status by the Mongolian government in 2018, now, this could be taken as the standard for any cases. ▪ Because of the influence of the unified orthography, everyone can correctly use the unified Mongolian(Cyrillic modern Mongolian) without huge confusion. ▪ As the unified newly-revised orthography dictionary with the legal status has been published, everyone should obey this for any circumstances.
