考古資料를 통해 본 百濟와 樂浪의 交涉

Cultural Exchange between Paekche and Lelang

  • 28

It has been believed that Paekche(Baekje) was strongly influenced by Lelang and China during the period of state formation. Especially Lelang, located at the northwestern part of the Korean peninsula, exercised political and cultural influence over western and southern Korea. Based on the studies of archaeological remains, this paper presents that Lelang influence over Paekche area was strong during the Proto Three Kingdom Period, but it had weakened during the Hanseong Paekche Period. From the various Proto Three Kingdom sites including settlements, burials, and production areas, we can easily find Lelang potteries and iron artifacts. However, the amount of Lelang artifacts decreased after the middle of the third century. The political power of Lelang became much weaker during the Hanseong Paekche Period. Instead, the influence of China became stronger at this point. Chinese artifacts, especially made in Hsi Chin(西晉), are found from the central areas of Paekche. However, Lelang artifacts were still common in the local areas such as Cheongju(淸州) and Jincheon(鎭川).
