Through the contents of ‘Huangdi-neijing(黃帝內經 the oldest Chinese medical book)’, it could be confirmed that tribes of northern region developed therapeutic method in order to treat disease symptoms due to their living environment. Such being the case, it could be presumed that Khitan tribe who was one of northern region tribes would have been furnished with their own therapeutic method and medical knowledge as its base as well. It is presumed that around 1st century, Xianbei(鮮卑) tribe that assimilated northern Xiongnu forces collapsed by Later Han(後漢) would have accommodated medical knowledge of Xiongnu into their own medical knowledge that was possessed by them before. But, Since Khitan tribe voluntarily called themselves as Khitan, as a literature that lets people know whether Khitan used medical knowledge having used by Xiongnu is nonexistent, nobody knows such historical background. However, their medical science level could be presumed as a medical science record of Wuhuan that was known to be the same tribe remains in ‘Sanguozhi (三國志, Records of the Three Kingdoms)’. In Wuhuan part of ‘Sanguozhi’, 5 kinds of method of treating disease is recorded and therapeutic method introduced in an anecdote of Suwu is confirmed as well. This means that medical knowledge of Xiongnu was flowed into Xianbei society and same method is presumed to have been performed in Khitan tribe as well. Additionally, therapeutic method having been traditionally utilized in the northern region was a medical culture having been generally utilized under the same climate and geographical condition rather than an exclusive property of a tribe. Among these, therapeutic method through hot spring and dairy product that had been widely used in norther region for a long time could be cited. In addition, it was observed that medical knowledge and medicine of Koguryo and Balhae were also flowed in Khitan.
