淸州 鳳鳴洞 土壙墓群

The Bongmyoeng-dong Pit-Tombs in Chŏengju

At the Bongmyoeng-dong site in Chŏengju, 243 pit tombs which belong to the Proto- Three kingdoms period(Mahan), were excavated, Among the pit tombs. 234 tombs are tomb burying single, and 10 tombs are burying together, constructed from the late 3rd century to the late 4th century. The basic form of arranging the dead body and the remains is to place the dead body at side and use the left room for the remains. If the tomb is laid from east to west, there is a tendency of placing the remains at the east side. In case of excavated remains, pottery was buried together with rounded jar and deep- bowl, which vary in style compared to the songjŏl- dong site and show increase in hardened pottery. In case of iron ware, the amount is rather small, from some tombs horse equipment like bits were found. The early form of horse equipment provides important source for the study on horse equipment in the early Paekche. At the B- 36 tomb, horse- shaped bronze buckle was excavated together with horse equipment which regarded the late 4th century. Based on this fact, it is considered that the existence of horse- shaped bronze buckle was lasted to the late 4th century and there is an aspect that the advent of horse equipment is overlapped with the end of horse- shaped bronze buckle.
