Challenges of Regional Economic Development in the Eastern Mongolia

This paper reviews the performances of regional economy in Eastern Mongolia such as population and its density, economically active population, unemployment, regional GDP, production of agriculture and industry, number of five animals, nomadic household, education, and human development index, and analyse the challenges of economic development in the region. Mongolia could be divided into five regions such as west, Khangai, central, east, and the capital city Ulaanbaatar, and east region consists of Dornod, Sukhbaatar, and Khentii aimags. This region is rich in natural resources and has a unique great plain called Menengiin Tal . Also it has lots of important historical sites such as the birth place of Chinghis Khan, the supposed tombs of Khan and the royal family, many Tibetan buddhism temples which deserve to be protected, and so on. Therefore the development policy in the region should be balanced between growth and preservation, agriculture and industry, urban and rural areas. Especially developing minerals such as petroleum and coal without thought for the environment should be stopped immediately, because it would destroy the nature and important historical and cultural sites. Instead more emphases should be given to the tourism industry and the environmentally conscious industry in order to improve the quality of life for the residents.
