우빠사냐(upāsana)와 박띠(bhakti) 의미

인도 사회에서는 신의 존재에 대한 물음과 인간의 유한함을 극복하고자 하는 믿음 그리고 행위(수행)들을 제시하는 박띠(bhakti) 사상이 있다. 박띠는 베다 시대의 이전부터 거슬러 올라가는데, 『리그베다』(Ṛgveda)에서 박띠의 어근은 ‘bhaj’(바즈)가 발견된다는 점에서 제기되기도 한다. 이와 비슷한 용어로 우빠니샤드(Upaniṣads)에서의 명상과 숭배라는 의미를 지닌 ‘우빠사냐(upāsana)’를 통해서도 박띠의 기원을 유추하기도 한다. 우빠사냐는 upa-√ās를 어근으로 갖는 동사의 활용 형태들과 함께 쓰여 ‘섬기다, 칭송하다, 숭배하다’ 는 것1)인데, 의미가 확대되어 ‘명상 혹은 숭배’의 의미로 함축시킬 수 있다. 그리고 박띠는 √bhj(바즈) 라는 어근으로 ‘숭배하다, 참여하다, 경배하다. 나누다’ 와 ‘사랑, 헌신, 경배’ 등 다양한 의미들을 가지며 주로 헌신과 사랑으로 번역하여 사용한다. 우빠니샤드에서의 이 둘의 용어는 외적 대상의 집중의 형태인 명상 즉 숭배의 의미를 갖고 브라흐만(Brahman)과 아뜨만(Ātman)의 동일함이라는 결과를 지향하다면, 우빠니샤드 이후 서사문학인 『바가바드 기따』(Bhagavad Gītā)에서는 신과 인간의 관계적 측면이 중요해지면서 박띠요가(Bhakti yoga)를 통한 신에게 절대적인 봉헌과 신에 대한 사랑의 삶이 보다 강조되고 있다. 이에 논자는 인도의 주요 경전인 우빠니샤드와 『바가바드 기따』 문헌을 통해서 이 둘의 용어가 갖고 있는 의미를 정리해보고자 한다.
