Perception-production relation in the cue use patterns of Korean stops by native Chinese speakers

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the perception and production patterns of non-native speakers are correlated in the context of using acoustic cues to differentiate between Korean lenis and aspirated stops. A perception test was conducted identifying tokens in which VOT and F0 values were systematically manipulated between /kan/ and /khan/. A production test was conducted in which words starting with a lenis or aspirated stop were read in a carrier sentence. Relative cue weightings were estimated via perceptual and production coefficients that were obtained from binary logistic regression analyses and discriminant function analyses of individual learner data (e.g., Shultz et al. 2012; Schertz et al. 2015). It was found that the correlation between perceptual and production coefficients was not significant for either VOT or F0. In general, individual learners used F0, which is the primary cue for the Korean stops, in perception, but did not use it in production, indicating a tendency for L2 perception to precede production.
