Theory of Personality Education in 『The Great Learning』: Metapraxis for the Teaching Practicum of Pre-Teachers

본 연구는 수기치인(修己治人)을논하고 있는 **대학**을 통해서 역량 중심의 인성교육의 방향을 모색하고 실천 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 ‘성의정심(誠意正心)’ 개념을 올바로 이해하고, 교육의 사태에서 실천되기 위한 이론적 토대를 마련하는 것이다. 이러한 목적에 대하여, 첫째, 수기(修己)의 과정에서‘성의정심(誠意正心)’의 의미는 무엇인가? 둘째, 삼강령과 성의정심의 관련에서 볼 때 **대학**이 인성교육에 주는 시사는 무엇인가? 하는 연구문제를 설정하고, 주희와 다산의 견해를 중심으로 논의하였다. 격물치지론이 팔조목에 대한 인식론적 수준에서의 해명이라면 성의정심론은 삼강령의 신민(新民)과의 관련에서 정(情)의 작용까지 포괄하여, 심(心)의 뜻을 보다 구체적이며 포괄적으로 설명하는 것으로 이해될 수 있다. 성의정심은 마음의 문제와 직접적인 관련을 맺고 있으며, ‘인성(人性)’은 경(敬)에 상응하는 성의와 정심의 교섭 작용을 통해서 이해될 때 비로소 교육적 의의를 가질 수 있다. 인성은 말과 행동으로 외부에 표현되기 이전의 ‘미발(未發)’의 성격을 지니고 있기 때문에 미발시 함양에서 인성의 교육적 측면이 부각된다. 이 글에서, 인성교육의 목적은 자아의 실현으로 설명될 수 있으며 수기(修己)하는 것과 다른 것이 아니라는 점, 그리고 경(敬)을 거점으로 지(知)와 행(行)이 병행될 때에 삶을 통해 만나게 되는 부단한 노력의 산물이라는 점을 시사하는 바이다.

This study aims to suggest an orientation for a capacity-based personality education and approach on the basis of the thesis ‘self-cultivating and people-governing’ in The Great Learning. It also examines the concept of a “Sincerity·Upright Mind” and provides a theoretical foundation for its practice. Whereas the chapter ‘investigation of things’ is about the epistemological explanation of the Eight Categories, “Sincerity·Upright Mind” explains the meaning of “Mind” and its actions concerning the everyday matters of New People. “Sincerity·Upright Mind” is more directly related to the problem of mind, and the educational meaning of “personality” could be understood in terms of the interaction between the two processes of “Sincerity” and “Upright Mind” Since personality is relevant to something ‘unexpressed-yet’ either through words or actions, the educational aspect of personality is concerned with a state in which feeling and thinking have not been aroused sufficiently yet in order to be expressed.
