The Effects of Road Type and Driver’s Age on Simulator Sickness

본 연구는 운전 시뮬레이션 상황에서 운전자가 경험하는 시뮬레이터 멀미에서의 차이를 운전자의 연령대와 도로 유형에 따라 비교하기 위해 수행되었다. 실험참가자의 연령집단은 30대의 젊은 운전자 집단과 60대의 노인 운전자 집단으로 구분하였고. 도로 유형은 고속도로, 지방도로 및 시내도로로 구분하였다. 운전 시작 이전의 멀미 점수를 포함하여 각 도로 유형에서 주행을 마친 직후 측정한 메스꺼움, 안구운동 불편 및 방향감각 상실 점수를 세 가지 멀미 유형으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 30대 운전자 집단과는 달리 60대 운전자 집단은 모든 도로 유형 조건과 멀미 유형 조건에서 운전 시작 전에 비해 운전이후의 멀미 점수가 유의하게 증가하였다. 둘째, 연령대별로는 60대 운전자 집단이 30대 운전자집단에 비해, 그리고 도로 유형별로는 시내도로, 지방도로, 고속도로의 순으로 시뮬레이터 멀미점수가 상대적으로 더 높았다. 셋째, 각 멀미 유형별로 멀미 점수에 대한 도로 유형의 효과를 분석한 결과, 30대 운전자에 비해 60대 운전자 집단의 경우는 모든 멀미 유형에서 도로 조건간 멀미 점수 차이가 뚜렷하였다. 본 연구 결과는 운전자의 연령대와 도로 유형에 따라 시뮬레이터멀미에서 차이가 있고, 특히 주변시에서의 빠르고 큰 움직임의 변화가 시뮬레이터 멀미를 야기하는 주요 요인임을 시사한다.

In this study, the effects of road type and driver s age on simulator motion sickness were investigated. Participants were divided into two age groups 30s and 60s, and three types of road were highway, rural road, and urban road. Nausea, oculomotor discomfort, and disorientation scores measured before and after driving and were analyzed. The main results of this study are summarized as follows. First, unlike young driver group, old driver group showed significantly higher simulator sickness after driving compared to before driving in all road types and sickness types. Second, main effects of age group and toad types were found: old drivers reported relatively higher simulator sickness scores for simulator sickness compared to young driver, and sickness score was higher in the order of in urban road, ryral road, and highway. Third, there was a clear difference in simulator sickness score between road conditions in all motion sickness types in old drivers compared to those in their 30s. The results suggest that tsimulator sickness can be differed by driver s age group and road type, and that rapid and large movement changes in peripheral vision are the main factors that cause sickness in the simulator.
