Poesie of Brahms’s Life and Music: Focusing on his Piano Music

본 논문은 브람스 음악이 절대음악의 전형이라고 하는 지나친 일반화를 피하여 그의 음악 창작에 기반이 된 낭만주의 정신을 제시하고 그 성격을 규명하며, 브람스 고유의 음악적 메시지와 그 전달 방식을 연구하는 데 목적이있다. 이 연구는 먼저 편지, 브람스가 일생 동안 수집한 독일 낭만주의 문인들의 사상과 시 등의 당대 기록에 기초하여 브람스가 표현하고자 한 것은 초기 낭만주의 사상이었음을 확인하였다. 다음으로 초기 독일 낭만주의 사상의 ‘포에지’, ‘이로니’, ‘단편’ 개념, 그리고 관련된 상징적 소재 등에 대해 알아본 후, 브람스의 피아노 소나타 제3번 op. 5, 성격소곡 <환상곡> op. 116을 통해 이 개념들이 그의 작곡에 어떻게 반영되었는지 고찰하였다. 결과적으로 브람스는 작곡을 통해 낭만주의 예술의 본질을 전달하기 위하여 먼저 그 사상을 삶의 자세로 견지했다. 초기에 피아노 소나타라는 낡은 형식 안에 낭만주의 사상에 부합하는 새로운 내용을 썼고, 후기에는 단편적 성격을지닌 인터메초를 중시했다. 또한 브람스는 상징적인 음형, 음암호, 시와 가곡의 인용 같은 작곡기법을 사용했다.

This paper aims to present the romantic spirit based on Brahms’s musical creation, identify itscharacter, and study his unique musical message and the way of delivering it, avoiding theexcessive generalization that Brahms s music is the epitome of absolute music. First of all, thisstudy confirmed that what Brahms tried to express was the early romantic thoughts based onthe contemporary records of letters, German romantic writers ideas and poems collected byBrahms during his lifetime. Next, after examining the concepts of ‘Poesie’, ‘Ironie’, ‘Fragment’and related symbolic materials of early German romantic thoughts, I examined how these conceptswere reflected in his composition through Brahms’s piano sonata No. 3 op. 5 and his characterpiece Fantasiest&#252;cke op. 116. As a result, in order to convey the essence of Romantic art through his composition, Brahmsfirst maintained the idea as an attitude of his life; wrote new contents consistent with romanticideas in the old form of piano sonata; valued Intermezzo, which has a fragmentary character;and used the composition technique such as symbolic musical figure, musical cipher andquotation from poems and songs.
