Set on a planet where violent geological events constantly threaten human lives and civilization, The Broken Earth invites the reader to imagine an alternative relationship to the environment that is neither inert nor hospitable and suggests a new approach to the environmental crisis centering the human-planet negotiation grounded upon the acknowledgement of and compensation for human wrongdoings. However, by making the planet a clearly anthropomorphic entity capable of negotiation, she undermines the environmental uncanny that she so carefully created, reducing the link between her fictional world and the reader’s own.
