Through the “Mirror’s Cracked World”: Nick Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels

본 연구는 닉 호킨의 소설 『배꼽 두 개 가진 여인』에 나타난 근대 필리핀의 격동기를 살았던 젊은이들의 탈식민적 정체성에 관심을 둔다. 배꼽을 두 개 가졌다고 주장하는 여성 코니의 이야기는, 홍콩에 살고 있는 필리핀 젊은이들의 삶에 혼란을 더하고, 그들이 필리핀에 대해 가지고 있는 신화적이고 향수 어린 관점을 직면하여 수정하게 만든다. 페페 몬슨은 파코와 몬슨선생의 마닐라 방문과 코니의 존재를 앨리스의 거울 뒤 뒤집힌 세계와 비교하는데, 이는 이들의 삶이 거울 위에 비친 이미지처럼 왜곡된 이상적 세계였음을 자각한 것이다. 본 연구는 몬슨선생과 젊은이들이 고대 신화의 이상과 스페인 통치 아래에서 과거 필리핀에 대한 향수 어린 기억을 어떻게 구축하고 또 변화시키고 있는지 살펴보고, 코니의 네 번에 걸친 상상적 죽음과 부활을 통해 과거와 현재의 상징적 화해를 어떻게 이끌어내는지 파악하고자 하였다. 특히 『배꼽』에서 반복되는 “깨어진 거울” 이미지를 중심으로 국가와 민족적 환상을 가로질러 필리핀의 국가와 개인의 혼란을 직시하고 재구조화하는 과정을 그려 냄으로써 민족의 새로운 정체성 구축의 가능성을 제시하고 있음을 분석하였다.

This study aims to introduce Philippine literature by analyzing Nick Joaquin’s A Woman Who Had Two Navels. The novel searches for the post-colonial identities of young Filipinos during the rapid change of the modern Philippines. The novel begins with Connie who claims her possession of two navels, which disturbs the young Filipinos living in Hong Kong. Connie’s lies force them to confront and revise their conception of mythical and nostalgic Philippines. Pepe Monson constantly compares Paco’s and Doctor Monson’s visits to Manila with Alice’s entrance into the looking-glass to explain their demised fantasies and self-identities based on the fantasies. This study closely investigates how they have constructed their identities out of ancient myths and nostalgic memories of the Philippines under the Spanish regime and how Connie’s presence forces them to break away from the fantasmatic images. It also examines how Connie undergoes four imaginary deaths and resurrections which lead to the symbolic reconciliation between the past and the present generations, suggesting the possibility of diasporic identity in the union of Connie and Paco.
