헝가리 백과사전에 나타난 한국에 대한 서술

Description of Korea in Hungarian Encyclopedias: 1833 - 1930

한국과 헝가리는 1892년 오스트리아-헝가리 제국과 한국(Korea)이 정식 외교 관계를 수립한 이래로 120여 년의 교류 역사를 갖고 있다. 그러나 오스트리아-헝가리 제국과 한국은 외교관계를 수립하기는 했지만, 교류가 활발한 것은 아니었다. 다만 헝가리는 한국과 수교 이전에도 아시아에 대한관심을 통하여 한국에 대한 지식을 쌓아 나갔다. 특히 백과사전류의 발간을통해 한국에 대한 지식을 확산하였다. 이 논문에서는 1833년부터 1930년대초반까지 헝가리에서 발간된 백과사전을 분석하여 헝가리가 한국에 대해가지고 있던 지식과 이미지를 분석해 보았다. 당시 헝가리인이 한국에 대해알고 있는 지식은 매우 소략했을 것이다. 따라서 한국에 대한 비교적 자세한 설명이 담긴 백과사전의 발간은 헝가리인에게 한국에 대한 지식을 알려주고 인식의 폭을 확장시키는 역할을 했을 것이다. 이러한 백과사전의 발간은 한국에 대한 지식이 전파되는 창구의 역할을 했음은 분명하다. 이 글에서는 헝가리의 백과사전인 ‘공익지식의 보고’ , ‘일반 헝가리 백과사전’ , ‘영토와 민족들’ , ‘아테나움 (휴대용)소백과사전’ , ‘팔러시 대백과사전’, ‘리버이 대백과사전’, ‘톨너이 신세계 대백과사전’을 분석하여 헝가리인이 한국과 한국인을 어떻게 인식하고 있었는지, 그들의 한국에 대한 지식은 어떠했는지를 살펴보았다.

Relations between Korea and Hungary go back some 120 years to when they were first formally established diplomatically in 1892 between Joseon and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. However, the establishment of diplomatic ties did not immediately result in active exchanges between the two sides. The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and scholars and tourists with great interest in Asia travelled to Joseon, and left records of the knowledge of the country that they had otherwise acquired. These records allow us to determine what the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy’s people thought of Korea. The present article examines ten encyclopedias. Hungarians would have had a very vague understanding of Korea. Hence, encyclopedias were a vital source of information, and would have helped to broaden the frontier of potential knowledge. The following are analyzed herein: Közhasznú Esmeretek Tára(1833), Egyetemes Magyar Encyclopaedia(1872), A Föld és népei(1892), Pallas Nagy Lexikona(1895), Révai Nagy Lexikona(1915), Tolnai Új Világ Lexikona(1927), Katolikus Lexikon(1932), Új Lexikon (1936), Új Idők Lexikona(1939).
