性齋 許傳의 ｢外國記｣에 관한 小考

조선후기 서양의 사상과 문물에 대한 탐구는 서학을 수용 혹은 배척하는 지적 흐름으로 나타난다. 그리고 이 시기 등장하는 다양한 문헌에서 필요한 정보만 초록하는 글쓰기는 시대적 지적 조건과 지향의 변화를 반영한다. 그러므로 許傳의 ｢外國記｣는 기존의 지적 체계 안에서 당대 새로운 지식을 어떻게 삽입하고 변용하는 지를 보여주는 하나의 지표로 볼 수 있다. 선행연구자들은 허전이 여러 한역서학서, 해외견문록, 서구식 세계지도를 직접 보고 정리하여 ｢외국기｣를 편찬하였다고 보았다. 그러나 ｢외국기｣의 내용들은 대부분 淸의 魏源의 『海國圖志』를 재인용한 것이다. 그렇다면 ｢외국기｣는 『해국도지』의 ‘요약본’ 혹은 ‘비망록’에 불과하다고 생각할 수 있다. 본고는 ｢외국기｣에서 『해국도지』를 재인용한 부분 외에 허전이 직접 열람한 서적을 밝혀내고 그 정보를 재배치하여 자신의 관점에서 내용을 재구성하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 허전은 『해국도지』의 편차와 서술 범위를 따르고 있으면서도 조선의 입장에 서서 필요한 목록을 추가하기도 한다. ｢외국지｣의 琉球와 北方雜國(몽골고원 및 러시아 동부)의 지리정보는 허전이 새롭게 추가한 조목이다. 허전이 이 조목을 추가한 이유는 청나라와 달리 조선의 입장에서는 이 두 지역 내의 외세가 조선에게 위협적이라고 여겼기 때문이다. 또한 허전은 조선 문인들의 저서를 인용하여 『해국도지』의 내용을 확인하고 보충하기도 하였다. 한편 허전은 ｢외국기｣에서 당대의 최신 정보를 선별하고 뛰어난 시대적 안목을 보여주지는 않는다. 그렇기 때문에 ｢외국기｣만을 내세워 어떤 학술적 지평을 이야기한다는 것은 불가하다. ｢외국기｣의 전후에 존재하는 이역관련 텍스트 간의 지식사적 연계성 속에서 ‘지식의 증대’라는 지적 흐름을 반영하는 글쓰기 방식의 한 예로써 ｢외국기｣를 바라보아야만 할 것이다.

As Chinese translated books of occidental studies became popular in Chosun, the intellects could receive information about the West which had hardly been known previously. Along with the background of the time, texts written in a new way appeared. Those were the abstracts which dealt with only interesting information from a variety of Chinese translated books of occidental studies. Heo Jeon’s Oegukgi was also one of those texts. Heo Jeon wrote Oegukgi by quoting many parts from Haiguo Tuzhi written by Wei Yuan in the Qing Dynasty. If so, we many think that Oegukgi should be just the ‘summary’ of Haiguo Tuzhi. This study has revealed the list of books he referred to when writing Oegukgi other than the quotations from Haiguo Tuzhi and also has analyzed Oegukgi’s system and characteristics of description and learned that he changed the order of contents and added some contents to reorganize the knowledge in his own viewpoint. Heo Jeon added geographic information about Okinawa, Mongolia, or the east of Russia which is not contained in Haiguo tuzhi. Unlike the position of Wei Yuan from the Qing Dynasty, Heo Jeon from Chosun deemed that the force of those neighboring regions should be threatening. Also, Heo Jeon quoted what had been seen or heard by Chosun people about the foreigners they directly met to verify Haiguo tuzhi’s information. Oegukgi is not the text to select the latest information of the time and understand the international relations sharply. We may have to see that Oegukgi should be as one of the ways of writing shown by the intellect that lived in the 19th century when there was plenty of information about foreign lands.
