[우수학술상] <인천아리랑>의 최초 기록과 선율에 관한 연구

A Study on the First Record and Melody of <Incheon Arirang >

본 연구는 19세기 조선 말 개화기에 인천지역에서 불렸던 <인천아리랑>의 최초 기록과 음악적 선율ㆍ곡조에 대해 규명하고자 하였다. 일제가 조선을 통치하기 이전에 한국 최초로 채록된 <인천아리랑>의 생성 유래를 살펴보고 항일과 배일감정을 담은 노래 가사의 정체성을 고찰하고자 하였다. 또한 <인천아리랑>이 어떠한 선율과 곡조로 불렸는지, 그 당시 서울과 경기지역에서 유행되었던 <자진아리랑(구조아리랑)> 계통의 악곡과 어떠한 음악적 연관성을 가지고 있는지를 비교 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 첫째, <인천아리랑>은 우리나라 최초로 기록된 <아리랑>임을 알 수 있다. 이와 관련된 자료로는 1894년 5월 일본에서 발간한 &#985172;유우빈호우치신문(郵便報知新聞)&#985173; ‘조선의 유행요’, 1894년 8월 일본 유학생 홍석현의 &#985172;신찬조선회화(新撰朝鮮會話)&#985173; ‘제32가 가사’, 1904년 하시모토 데이수케의 &#985172;신찬일한회화(新撰日鮮會話)&#985173; 등에서 ‘인천’이라는 지명이 들어간 <아리랑> 가사가 유학생과 일본인들에 의해 기록된 것을 확인할 수 있다. 둘째, <인천아리랑> 가사는 근대 민요로서 일반 아리랑과는 거리가 있음을 보여주고 있다. 즉 상업적이거나 유흥적이기보다는 노동 현장에서 항일과 배일감정을 현실적으로 담고 있다는 것이 특징이다. 셋째, <인천아리랑> 선율의 모곡은 경기 <자진아리랑(구조아리랑)> 계통의 악곡이다. 개화기에 경기 <자진아리랑>은 한양과 경기지역에서 기층 민중과 전문 예인들에 의해 유행되었고, 1896년 H. B. 헐버트는 <아르랑>을 오선보에 채보하였다. 1914년 이상준은 『조선속곡집』에 <아르렁타령>으로 채보하였으며, 1933년 김죽파는 가야금병창 <자진아리랑>을 음원으로 수록하였다. 따라서 이들이 기록한 자료와 음원을 비교해 보면, 우리나라 최초 <아리랑>을 오선보에 채보한 H. B. 헐버트 <아르랑>은 경기 <자진아리랑> 계통의 악곡이며, 이는 <인천아리랑>의 모곡임을 추측할 수 있다. 파생 시기 또한 적어도 19세기 조선 말 이전으로 추정할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the first record of <Incheon Arirang>, which was sung in Incheon area during the enlightenment period of the late Joseon period in the 19th century, by looking into its musical melody and tune. It is notable that the earliest record of <Incheon Arirang> existed before the Japanese colonial period, and the song was examined by the Japanese authority, in order to scrutinize the anti-Japanese sentiments, possibly embedded in the lyrics of the song. In addition, this study compares and analyzes what kind of melody and tune of <Incheon Arirang> had been sung in those days, and how it is related with <Jajin Arirang (Gujo Arirang)>, which was popular in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces at that time. As a result of this research, the followings are found. First, it can be claimed that <Incheon Arirang> is the first recorded <Arirang> song in Korea. The lyrics of Incheon Arirang are found from contemporaneous sources, such as ‘Popular Songs of the Joseon Dynasty’ 『Yuwobinhowuji Newspaper (郵便報知新聞)』 published in Japan in May 1894, ‘32nd lyric’ in 『Sinchan Joseon s hoehwa (新撰朝鮮會話)』 that was written by Hong Seok-heun a Korean student studying in Japan in August 1894, and also in the Korean language textbook 『Sinchan-ilhanhoehwa (新撰日鮮會話)』 written by a Japanese man Hasimoto Daisuke in 1904. Secondly, the lyrics of <Incheon Arirang> are considerably different from the ordinary modern Arirang songs. In other words, the lyrics of <Incheon Arirang> were created with the feelings of anti-Japanese sentiments existed amongst most Korean laborers. It is clear that the song was dissimilar to the usual Arirang songs, which was popular in commercial or pleasurable environments. Thirdly, the tune of <Incheon Arirang> was developed from the musical melody of <Jajin Arirang (Gujo Arirang)> that was popular in Gyeonggi Province. During the time of the enlightenment period, the Gyeonggi <Jajin Arirang> became prevalent in Hanyang and Gyeonggi area, not only throughout the public substratum, but also by professional singers. In 1896. H. B. Hulbert transcribed Arirang onto sheet music. In 1914, Lee, Sang Jun recorded the song as <Arirang Taryeong> in Joseon Dynasty s popular song collection. A Gayageum performer, Kim, Juk Pa included Gayageum Byeongchang <Jajin Arirang> in a sound recording in 1933. For these reasons, by comparing the documented records and the sound recording, we can learn that H. B. Hulbert’s <Arreurang>, which was the first piece of Korea’s <Arirang> to be transcribed onto Western-style musical score, was, in fact, a part of the <Jajin Arirang> sung in Gyeonggi Province. We can further presume that the Hulbert’s <Arreurang> was is the original song of the <Incheon Arirang>. We can use this finding to note that the piece was created at least before the end of Joseon dynasty in the 19th century.
