This study investigated translationese (or unnatural translation) aspects in English reference books of each grade for middle school English learners. Specifically, this study aimed to look at how translationese appeared as the grade goes up, and to provide alternative translations based on interpretive translation theory. From three types of English reference books for each grade of middle school, 1140 sentences with translationese were extracted and divided into nine types of translationese based on Shin (2020)’s framework. The results of the analyses showed that translationese is intensifying and expanding as the grade goes up and translationese involving passive verb, causative verb, rearrange word order, and changing speech act in that sequence were highly frequent in order. Overall, this study suggested using interpretative translation in English reference books may produce natural and appropriate translations based on Korean linguistic features and lead to learners’ recognition that there are various layers in translation.
