언어유희: 언어의 형태와 의미를 중심으로

Language Play: on the form and meaning of language

  • 56

This paper attempted to examine language play in terms of form and meaning. Language play is a kind of verbal means that gives a comedy effect based on intentionality and anomaly. And it is usually based on polysemy or similar pronunciation. However, Language play should not be studied separately in form or meaning of words. Although language has the arbitrality, speakers have an intention to reduce the cognitive load, by giving a certain motivation between form and meaning, which is particularly well evident in secondary nomination. In particular, the motivation between form and meaning of words are well revealed in the language play, in secondary nominations, including borrowing words. Therefore, it is necessary not to study separately language play in terms of form or meaning, but to examine it in the both aspect. Examining the motivation of the form and meaning of language is helpful in the study of cognitive language procedures such as metaphors and metonymy, and this study is expected to become the basis of these studies.
